In 1980, he graduated from the Faculty of Management at the University of Economics (now the University of Economics) in Bratislava. From 2002 to 2004, he held the position of Vice Governor of the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS), and from 2005 to 2010, he served as Governor of the NBS. In 2010, he was appointed as the Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), based in Paris, France. In 2012, he became Chairman of the Council for Budget Responsibility, a position he held until September 2020. Since March 1, 2017, he has been a member of the Supervisory Board of the National Oncology Institute.
